Chapter 15
Cassie held her breath, she tried not to make a sound. She turned slightly and realized she was close to the edge of the cliff. She couldnât move farther away from the person, there was nowhere to go. She froze where she stood.
âWhoever is there, you need to put your hands up!â The commanding voice carried through the mostly silent surroundings.
It coursed right down Cassieâs spine as she recognized it instantly.
Cassie drew a slow breath in an attempt to calm herself down. There was no way to get away. Sheâd have to face him, hopefully before he decided to draw his weapon.
âItâs me, Oliver.â Cassie raised her hands and forced herself to speak.
âCassie?â Oliver stepped into the light and she could see him clearly now as he walked toward her. As soon as he reached her, his gray eyes locked to hers in the same moment that his jaw rippled.
âIâm sorry.â Cassie gulped back another breath as he continued to stare at her.
âJust what do you thinkââ Oliver interrupted his own words as he cleared his throat. âI mean, why?â He shook his head. âCome out here, away from the edge. Come into the open.â
The moment Cassie started to move, she realized her body had begun to shake. Was it when she saw the shadow, or when she heard his voice? As she stepped toward him he placed his hand on her shoulder.
âCassie?â Oliverâs grip softened as she continued to tremble. âAre you okay?â
âYou startled me.â Cassieâs cheeks flushed as she looked away from him. âI didnât know who was out here.â
âIâm sorry that I scared you.â Oliver ran his hand soothingly along her shoulder, then sighed. âNot that I should be. Maybe a good scare is what you need to realize that you need to be more careful.â
âGreat, thanks. Iâll keep that in mind.â Cassie crossed her arms, but didnât draw away from his touch. If he had hugged her, she probably would have burst into tears. Sheâd been so sure that she was going to have to fight for her life just moments before. As much as she hated to admit it, he was right. Sheâd put herself in a very dangerous position, and could only feel relieved that it was him and not Clydeâs killer that was in the woods.
âIâm sorry.â Oliver let his hand fall away as he gazed at her. âI had no idea it was you up here, otherwise I would have identified myself earlier. You know that, donât you?â
âYes, of course.â Cassie smiled slightly.
âWhat made you think that this was a good idea? What if it wasnât me that found you?â Oliver pursed his lips and looked up at the sky, then looked back at her.
âI just wanted to go for a walk, and once I started, I landed up here.â Cassie continued to grip the ring tightly in her hand. âI know that Aiden is in a lot of trouble, and I know that thereâs still not a solid explanation for what happened to Clyde.
